The dates on this page are drawn from Norman Watson’s careful research in his book Poet McGonagall.
I heard the following 2 poems in Dundee. Is either a true poem of McGonagall?
No but No
Aye but aye
I’m away doon the road
Fer a cupper tea and a pie.
As I was coming doon the road.
I saw a coo, a bull by God!
No, Adrian, you’re a victim of the “if it’s a bad Scottish poem, it must be by McGonagall” fallacy. He’s not responsible for every bit of doggerel penned north of the border.
Just most of it.
Did McGonagall really miss commemorating the 05 April 1902 Ibrox disaster, or could there be a missing poem out there somewhere?
I’ve known the following couplet for donkey’s years. Is it from a McGonagall poem on Queen Victoria’s funeral?
Dust to dust, ashes to ashes,
Into the tomb the great queen dashes
The only poem we have related to the end of Victoria’s life is The Death of the Queen, and that neither covers her funeral of contains those lines. So I’d assign that to the “all doggerel = McGonagall” myth pile.
A little Googling assigns that couplet to an unnamed Indian poet. This article, for example: An Anatomy of Abuses: Why Bad Poetry is Bad
I don’t see why this guy gets all the praise and blame for bad poetry. Mine is a lot worse than his.
Fellow poet Thomas McElwain’s claim above – namely, that his poetry is worse than that of our William – seems implausible to say the least. Come on, Thomas, let’s see if you can prove it!
